Love Finds You In Mackinac Island, Michigan by Melanie B. Dobson (Love Finds You #52)

love finds you in mackinac island michigan coverMackinac Island is a small island in Lake Huron in the state of Michigan.  What is remarkable about this island is that it’s been preserved as a 19th-century town where the only “vehicles” are horse-drawn carriages and the summer air is perfumed with the lilacs that grow everywhere on the island.

Fans of the Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves film, Somewhere in Time, will recognize selected locations from the film, here on the island, including the lovely Grand Hotel where folks still can stay in Victorian splendor or stop by for tea time.  In October the hotel hosts Somewhere in Time fans but summer’s still the peak season where tourists have been flocking by ferry to the island for over a century.

Recently I had the opportunity to receive a copy of Love Finds You in Mackinac Island, Michigan by Melanie Dobson.

Dobson’s book has the tagline:

“She must choose between her family’s fortune and her heart’s desire.”

While this novel is billed as a story of duty vs. love, it is also a story about:

  • opening ourselves to trust others,
  • the harmful effects of gossip,
  • and learning to forgive.

Dobson delves thematically into the nature of God and how people worship Him. Elena finds the traditional church too stuffy and sedate for the wildness that she associates with God and finds herself closer to Him out in the wild.

Elena’s spiritual growth as she learns about prayer is gently tucked into the text at the right time.  Christian readers and folks who enjoy inspirational fiction with a wholesome romance will appreciate this novel and learn some fun facts about the island too.

Here’s a list of things about Mackinac Island I learned from reading this book:

  • There are over 100 varieties of lilacs on the island.
  • The Grand Hotel has the “world’s largest porch”.
  • During the War of 1812, Mackinac Island was fought over by the British and the Americans.
  • The British forced Americans to renounce their citizenship and swear their loyalty to King George III.  If they didn’t, they were arrested.

Have you visited Mackinac Island before?  Please share your experiences/photos/memories with us. Have you read this “Love Finds You” title?  What did you think of the story?
