I forget where I got this image from. It was originally downloaded to be a website backdrop and I rediscovered it in my Media Library today and thought it’d make a whimsical graphic to use. No infringement to my knowledge.

This past week I read a great article by Jessica Abel that really kicked my creative behind and introduced me to the concept of “idea debt“. Thanks to Austin Kleon who originally shared the article to his tribe. I love your work!

I was thinking about how to get around this fear of jumping in the water and came to the conclusion that the best way is to try and write a little something often, then be accountable for it.

I’ve been familiar with Dean Wesley Smith‘s idea of “writing in public” for a number of years and I admire that level of transparency/accountability. More recently, I ran across Kim Iverson (speculative fiction/mystery/romance writer) who is also doing a daily word count and it’s been nagging on my conscience that I really ought to be doing this myself.

So, when there are entries to be had, I’ll be posting here, and for my own records, I will be using an awesome spreadsheet made available by Jamie Raintree, which allows me to track up to eight consecutive projects at once (thanks Jamie!).

I currently have two projects that I am tracking (more to come?) – Avalon, a text-based roleplaying game I occasionally contribute to, and my blogging here. As of this morning, I had the following monthly count for February 2016:

  • Avalon: 383 words
  • Blogging: 910 words

Today, I’ve been writing on and off all day and I have absolutely no idea of how much time I’ve spent. Should I be tracking that at all?  (I’m indecisive.) I can tell you that what I’ve been working on today has been future blog posts to be appearing infrequently (weekly?) starting tomorrow.

Total for the day: 2,623 words

Church tomorrow and I’m pulling a half-day shift so despite it being a weekend, I don’t anticipate today’s level of productivity. We shall see.

February 2016 Totals To Date:

  • Avalon: 383 words
  • Blogging: 3,533 words
