Emerald City: "Beautiful Wickedness"

Emerald City is a reimagining of the L. Frank Baum books for a GoT generation, airs on Friday nights on NBC (on Fridays at 9/8c). All images belong to their respective owners. No infringement intended. This week’s discussion contains spoilers so fair warning…

I have to admit that I’ve been missing parts of each episode between starting late, or getting up during commercial breaks and taking too long to come back, but that said, I don’t recall seeing Joely Richardson (Glinda) once in last night’s episode. Still, the episode was definitely Glinda-centric as we get a clearer idea of what North is doing up there with all of those little girls, and surprisingly, Lucas is involved. Tip bumping into Jack was nice, although their reunion/revelation felt forced (in part by Lady Ev) but don’t rule out the romantic relationship just yet.

In last week’s blog post, I mentioned that there might be room for some “tribal mojo” to help Oz defeat The Beast Forever so I was delighted to see Ojo’s wife who brings to life a tiny stone figure with a magical song. It’s clear that when the Wizard mentions that the magic needed to defeat The Beast Forever is stuck in the Prison of the Abject, he’s referring to Ojo’s wife. (At least, it seems clear to me anyway!)

Have to admit that I’m more than a bit disappointed that the writers took the scientist experiment gone wrong to transport Frank/the Wizard and his companions to Oz. I get that this more closely follows with the classic lore of the air balloon which carries him off, but somehow, I could see them integrating better if they’d gone with the group being anthropologists or something along those lines. Ah well.

I didn’t expect them to talk about Dorothy’s background so soon (recall, I had forecasted that it would be next week), so I’m really curious to see where they’re going with this based on the episode title. Just a friendly reminder that the guessing is all in good fun, and it’s nice to see TV writers upsetting my predictions from time to time.

So what’s your theory? Where do you think the story is headed? Leave a comment below.
